April 13,2021. At approx. 2010 hrs, The Oliver Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a “Football Field” sized fire on the East side of Osoyoos lake in the area of the Osoyoos Cottages.
Upon arrival crews were able to surround the fire and under the direction from BC Forestry, crews extinguished the perimeter of the fire and knocked down any fire contained to any trees and shrubs in the area, leaving the interior area of the fire to smolder and burn itself out.
Some smoke and hot spots may have been visible overnight while a BC Forestry crew worked the remainder of the fire this morning.
This fire is believed to be human caused.
Lot’s of hard work put in by OFD crews resulted in containing the fire and preventing it from spreading further overnight. It is still early in the year and we are already seeing an increase in the amount of grass/brush fires in the area. With little rain so far this year, the valley bottom is looking very dry so everyone needs to take care to help prevent fires!
***
Oliver Fire Department dispatched to land adjacent to the Cottages property land under the jurisdiction of the BC Forest Service. Dispatch at 8:07 pm and command terminated after midnight.
Oliver fire fighters created a perimeter around the fire that continued to burn.
Forestry personnel expected to be on the scene this morning.
