from Edwin and Don:
Last week I was chatting with my friend, Don Lawlor and we were talking about Myra Canyon and the KVR. He said ‘Let’s do it next week, how about Wednesday’ I said, Sure!
So on Wednesday morning Lorraine drove us to Kelowna and out to the Myra Canyon trail-head. We hopped on our Mountain Bikes at 11.33 am and rode south over the 18 trestles built 100 years ago (some were burnt in the 2003 fire but were all rebuilt) The ride over the trestles was spectacular, built to take the trains over deep canyons. We continued on past the trestles and our destination was Chute Lake Lodge, 35 kilometres from our start. We got into some bad conditions where the trail was badly flooded and found ourselves walking our bikes through water over a foot deep in many places.
We arrived at Chute Lake Lodge 4 hours later and collapsed on their lawn exhausted with wet clothes and very wet feet and shoes! But a few beers later and some food in our stomachs we felt better.
We spent the night at the Lodge ‘Glamping’, They have permanent ‘Tents’ complete with twin beds and even a wood-stove, the food was great and after a good nights sleep, we were woken up by the Loons on the lake and Geese that were very close by!
A full breakfast later we packed up and on our bikes again for the 43 kilometre ride to Penticton. The trail was in good condition and the ride was easy with a constant 2% grade downhill. We arrived in Penticton 3 hours later and had lunch and then biked to Okanagan Falls where Lorraine picked us up.
We were exhausted, we were sore but the experience was well worth it. A total of about 100 kilometres.
We would recommend visiting Myra Canyon by car and just walking or riding the Trestles. Chute Lake Lodge is also accessible by car with great overnight accommodation and food.
As Jack said ‘One of our Wonders of the World’
