I found this story compelling and will publish parts of it.
Use of the word “meaningful” by an Okanagan Valley school district gets the attention of teachers in the Kelowna area.
The Central Okanagan Teachers Association (COTA) is asking for a public apology from SD23 superintendent Kevin Kaardal following comments made on a recent public forum.
A letter obtained by Castanet from COTA Teacher’s rep Susan Bauhar takes issue with comments made by Kaardal regarding his plans to start easing teachers back into on-site education instead of working from home, and the ease of arranging childcare in this situation.
“Employees are being paid and it makes sense that they have to be doing meaningful work, and sometimes that may mean they have to work from on-site, and sometimes that means they can work remotely,” Kaardal said Thursday night.
Bauhart told staff the comment implies teachers have not been doing meaningful work during this time and called it….. “so very damaging.”
Central Okanagan board chairperson Moyra Baxter say Bauhart’s understanding of Kaardal’s comments couldn’t be further from the truth. The Board believes this assertion is completely false and notes that the superintendent has consistently referenced the outstanding work that is taking place throughout the school district by its staff.
Sometimes one word in a sentence – can create a brouhaha.
