Large Item Collection Cancelled Across RDOS, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos and Keremeos
All Large Item Collection events across the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) have been cancelled during April 2020 due to concerns relating to the COVID-19 virus. This includes the cancellation of municipal Large Item Collection events in Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos and Keremeos.
In participating communities, Large Item Collection events allow residents to place unwanted furniture, appliances and mattresses for collection once a year. The program has been very popular and well used. As conditions change, local governments will attempt to organize a similar event in the fall. If collection becomes possible later this year, residents will be informed of the new dates.
The cancellation is due to the need to protect workers. Collecting large items requires workers to be in close quarters. Two people are required to lift the items collected, while a third person drives the vehicle. The proximity of workers places them at risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19.
Regular collection of curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste will proceed as normal. Only one person operates each truck which allows for safe physical distancing while collecting garbage, recycling and yard waste.
Local governments and their collector, Waste Connections of Canada regret this inconvenience. Health officials are asking people to stay home until further notice. Please stockpile large items rather than visiting local landfills or recycling facilities at this time.
