A pilot controls the flight of an airplane. Their job includes making a flight plan and getting that approved before they even get on the plane. Bigger planes have an auto-pilot which can fly the plane but needs to be programmed by the pilot. Sometimes, when the  construction on a highway is especially involved and messy and there is only one way, one lane allowed through, there is a pilot vehicle that keeps us slowed down and going along the right path.
