Dress

Dressing a turkey is not the same as dressing myself. I get the tuxedo on before stepping out to the ball. The turkey gets onion and stuffing in its tummy some parsley some bits of fruit and maybe a garlic clove before going into the oven. The tree trunk gets sawn into boards before being used to build a wall of a house. All nicely dressed with someplace special to go. Getting dressed is to look nice

When I dress up I wear finer clothes, maybe fix my hair some, shine my shoes. When I dress down I care less about standing out, more shabby if anything. Then we have these jeans full of tears, skin and knees showing, that some tell me is ‘fashion’ at its best. When you give me a dressing down, you tell me how awful and useless I am. Some parents call this parenting. Being dressed down… does not feel good

A dress, is a garment, covers from neck to ankles at a maximum and from high thigh to mid chest as a minimum, though it may also have openings to show tummy. The basic function is to cover and keep warm. While we are at it, the dress might as well be attractive, or not. Attractive might mean patterns in the cloth or pleats or puffy sleeves or any creative additions one might like. Dresses can be impressive

Men wear dresses too. Though I’m fairly sure that a highlander would not be pleased to have his kilt referred to as a dress. Yet, there really is no rule about the gender of the one wearing a dress. Mess dress is the special attire worn by military personnel at formal dinners and such events. Both female and male military wear mess dress. Mess dress is more like a business suit than a typical dress

Soldiers hear, “full arm dressing, right dress”. They are to come into a line facing front, looking right, side by side, left arm extended, touching the shoulder of the adjacent soldier. Once positioned, the order, “eyes front” means drop the arm, come to attention, look forward. This is the ‘right dress’ command. Different from choosing the right dress to wear to the dance or the best dressing for the salad.
