Superintendent Ted De Jager provided a source of information with specific crime statistics and said he wanted to spend more time updating directors on the bigger-picture operations now that police calls have quietened down for the winter.
“It’s a very seasonal thing, we tend to see big peaks in the summer and they come down this time of year,” De Jager said. “We spend our time now working with all of you to set priorities, because we know that the big peak is coming again in the summer.”
He explained that the roughly 100 RCMP members in the regional district responded to a total of 35,678 calls over 2018, took in 1,953 prisoners, dealt with 1,318 motor vehicle incidents with eight fatal crashes and issued 1,886 traffic violation tickets.
“That’s essentially 100 calls in the region per day,” De Jager said. “About 60 per cent of our calls for service are not things that will result in charges, but the number of charges that are going forward against our prolific offenders is increasing.”
