My name is Dermott Hutton. I am a proud father, husband and a local small-business owner. We moved to this amazing town, Oliver, just over two years ago to be in a place where we can watch our children and our dreams flourish. I volunteer on the Board of Directors for the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce, and on the Pinnacles Youth Soccer organization as a parent coach.
As a co-owner of Firehall Brewery, I have actively participated in community events, such as hosting fundraisers for the Food Bank, the Youth Skatepark, the “Tots and Tykes” Playpark. As well, I contribute to regularly sponsoring community fundraisers and charity events in the community, like the Desert Sun Counselling Centre, Oliver Hospice Care, and the Rotary Club of Oliver.
Since moving to Oliver, my family and I have been embraced by the local community and feel as though we want to give back by giving our service to the wonderful people of this town. It is with that in mind that I am running for Oliver Town Council.
I believe that in order for Oliver to grow and thrive as a community we need a firm plan. One that demands a vision for the revitalization of our downtown core, including plans for Station Street. We have a plethora of amazing entrepreneurial citizens that, if given the right circumstances, will drive economic development and breathe new life into our town that we will all prosper from.
Through a detailed budgeting process, we need to allocate funds towards our aging infrastructure as well as our need for security. We need to continue to pressure and work with our provincial and federal governments to properly allocate funds in ways that keep the safety of our community paramount
As a council member, I will work hard to promote new business development in Oliver by helping to keep and create business-friendly policies and to fight for the safety and security of the place where we chose to live and raise our families. I believe in this town and I want to unify the community. I will work hard for every person that lives in Oliver, I promise that I will listen to all opinions, and that I will always have the community as a whole in mind when working with my fellow councillors.
