The title of a story is the name for it, which is meant to represent what the story is about. Or not. The story title can intrigue, deflect, confuse, something to entice curiosity. It can also mean little unless we have read the first few books in the series. Any work of art can have a title. Any of us can title anything at all, such as the look of the lawn after we have freshly mowed it, or when we are about to mow it.
The title for a piece of land is a legal document declaring who owns it, along with a detailed description of the shape/size/location of the land. The Heavyweight Boxing Title is recognition of the Champion in that division for that sport. The title in most sports has, in itself, a title, which is a name. The Stanley Cup is the coveted title in hockey, for instance. A Blue Ribbon might be it for the best pie at the Fair.
To be entitled is to be permitted, to have legal support in making a claim. I could be entitled to feel angry or to receive a free drink from my frequent buyer card. I could have earned entitlement to go to University or to enjoy an alcohol drink in a pub. Some entitlements just show up, like when I become a certain age. Some I must earn, like getting my driver’s licence by passing a test.
A person’s position in society can have a title, like being a Supreme Court Judge. The title of ‘lawyer’ is a stepping stone to becoming a Judge, so a lower title. Titles can, thus, be a part of an hierarchy. Gaining a title is a journey. It takes work and accomplishment at a level that deserves recognition. What about the title of ‘mother’? Not every biological mother gets the title. Are you willing to let yours know that she does.
I can feel entitled to something. That can evolve into demanding that something. And that can feel less than happy. At such a time, what if I could remember that I am always entitled to be happy? No, really, happiness can be a choice and we are all, always, entitled to feel happiness. Strange thing that. I have the power to claim my entitlement to happiness at anytime. Some of us do and I like those people best.
