Oliver’s brand new Rock and Roll Picnic: three weeks til party-time!
Oliver Parks and Rec staff and Oliver Tourism volunteers are prepping for a party in the park… and you’re invited! On Friday, August 17th, bring your family and friends down to Oliver Community Park for Oliver’s first ever Rock and Roll Picnic, the official fundraiser for the Roots and Fruits Expo.
The evening will kick off at 6:00 pm with The Burying Ground, a band reminiscent of the music of the juke joints and jazz halls of the 1920’s and ’30s, with toe-tapping dance music, the yearning of country blues and the energy of ragtime and jazz.
At 8:00 pm, expect the volume to crank a bit higher when High Voltage, the Okanagan’s best AC/DC tribute band, leaps onto the stage. For those about to rock, we salute you!
Come hungry. Your ticket includes hot, roasted corn and the best (and most creative) hotdogs you’ll ever eat: some of our area’s best chefs will compete for glory in the no-holds-barred “Top Dog” gourmet hotdog competition, and you get to taste-test all the delicious results. Think you know hotdogs? Think again! In hopes of going home with the “Golden Wienie” People’s Choice trophy and a year of bragging rights, Chefs will use locally sourced ingredients to transform humble hotdogs in works of culinary art.
In case you’re still hungry, other vendors will be on site with a variety of treats including Penticton’s Hawaiian Shave Ice. Oliver’s own Firehall Brewery will be selling craft beer and the “Uncork the Sun Sangria Party” will feature white and red wine sangria mixed with local fruit available for purchase.
The Rock and Roll Picnic is a family-friendly event, so be sure to bring the kids along. When they get tired of eating and dancing, they’ll happily dig about in the giant sand box, or get soaked in the pop-up spray park.
Tickets are $20/adult, $10/student in advance, or $25/adult and $15/student at the door. Children 10 and under are free. Tickets are available at the Oliver Visitor Centre, the Parks and Recreation office and online at oliverrecreation.ca. 100% of funds raised at the Rock and Roll Picnic will be used to help keep the Oliver Roots and Fruits Expo, which takes place all day Saturday, August 18, free and a fantastic time for all.
