Friday evening the Oliver Fire Department was called to help locate a male reported missing, last seen in an area of the river near Park Rill Road swimming with a friend.
The man, from Quebec, was found at about 7:15 p.m. along the shoreline further downstream by the department’s swift water rescue team, according to Fire Department spokesman Rob Graham.
Graham said at about the same time the man was located, fire crews were called to assist four people who were stuck on an island in the river, further north, with no safe way to shore.
Crews needed about an hour, Graham said, to bring the four people safely to shore, who were a male and three females all from Quebec as well.
Oliver – Osoyoos Search and Rescue assisted, and a raft they had was deployed to retrieve the stranded swimmers one by one.
