Lunch at the Reopel
When I worked at the Oliver Credit Union, we had to balance all the accounts. It was usually an all day event and into the evening some times if we did not balance. In those days, we had to enter account balances by using an adding machine and we had to balance to the penny so if we were out, one would call the balance and the other would tick off the very long tape.
One day we were out on the shares accounts and it was close to supper time. Mr. Travis locked up the office and took us all over to the Reopel for supper.
I ordered a hamburger and fries and chocolate shake and the rest ordered whatever they wanted. We sat at the table chatting away hoping it would not be a late night but even if it was, we usually had fun doing it.
Presently our orders started coming and of course my hamburger was last. I liked my hamburger cut in half which the cook did not do so I got up with the plate in my hand and went over to the counter to get a sharp knife to cut it. The cook came out and chuckled and cut the burger in half.
I turned and took one step back towards our table when my shoe caught a wrinkle in the carpet and I felt myself falling forward. I was determined to not drop my hamburger and stretched my arm out as I fell to the floor. I landed flat on my face but victory was mine……my hamburger stayed on my plate!
Everyone was laughing out loud at the spectacle of me with my arm stretched out and my hamburger still on the plate. Mr. Travis just pulled down his half specs to see me fall and shook his head. “That Brenda…it is a wonder she is still alive!”
Well………..I sure didn’t want to have to wait for another hamburger, ya know!!!
