High winds have toppled seven large pine trees in Skaha Lake Park, according to the City of Penticton.

The park was closed Tuesday afternoon for public safety, but has since reopened.

“Staff have secured the areas where the trees are down or are leaning,” community engagement coordinator JoAnne Kleb said.

“All other areas have been reopened for visitors,” who are being asked to avoid the secured areas, Kleb said.

A hockey court was also damaged by one of the falling trees.

The City of Penticton says staff will clean up the trees Wednesday and reopen the remaining areas of the park.

High winds were also a problem in Summerland, where the winds blew over a tree in Memorial Park, and caused power outages in some areas of the city. On Prairie Valley Road near Cartwright Mountain, a tree struck a power line.
