Oliver Parks and Recreation is celebrating a successful breakfast held for Canada’s 150th Birthday. Our Pancake Breakfast was very popular this year with a total of 550 guests coming to have a meal, view the Community’s Canada 150 Fund Mosaic, and enjoy a piece of cake provided by the Town of Oliver.
We kicked the July 1st event off at 8:30AM by having the Oliver Legion Branch raise the flag. At 9:30AM we had MP Richard Cannings and Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes unveil Oliver Community’s Canada 150 Fund Mosaic. Also present for the unveiling was Area C Director Terry Schafer, Councillor Maureen Doerr, Councillor Jack Bennest, Councillor Larry Schwartzenberger, Councillor Petra Veintimilla.
After the Mosaic Unveiling, Lori Martine’s Sage Valley Voices and the OES Canadiana Chorus presented a shortened version of their “My Canada” performance. Guests enjoyed listening to the chorus, as well as a few interactive sets where the choir mixed with the audience to create a group sing-along. Members of the community were also encouraged to take advantage of Canada Day activities at the Community Centre such as Free Tennis with the Tennis Club and the Pool’s Loonie Swim.
The Staff and Society of Oliver Parks and Recreation would like to thank their dedicated volunteers for helping to make this event an all-around success from set-up to greeting and serving. Thank you to: Pat Aldridge, Linda Brooks, Doris and Ian Gray, Cody Isted, June Johnston, Polly Mckay, Linda Magoffin, Cathy Pidduck, Ingrid Plattmann, Carol and Dale Young, the Youth with a Mission Global Gateway group, society members – Larry Clarke, Shiela Lange, and Dennis Magoffin. A huge thank you to Jose Rodrigues from Azorean Catering for being our pancake breakfast chef. This event would not have been possible without the help of so many hands.
Thank you also to Chief Administrative Officer, Cathy Cowan, and Corporate Officer Diane Vaykovich for working hard at bringing Oliver’s Canada 150 Fund Mosaic to the Hall to be displayed and for ordering delicious birthday cake to celebrate Canadas 150th.
