To point is to indicate direction as in Harry pointed to the house. The point can be a place, a prominent land feature that is at the furthest reach in one direction. The cardinal points on a compass are North, South, East and West. A point on a map is a specific location and I can point to that point with my finger or a pencil or whatever is handy. A point is usually sharp as in the end of a pencil
To make my point about my statement, is to explain it or defend it, to reinforce it. The point is the reason or conclusion of a discussion, the most important conclusion. To say that something does not have a point is to say it is useless and not wanted. When a story has no point, not even to simply entertain, what is that? I suppose it is just words without anything of interest to say.
A point is the record of a goal, a score count. The point spread is the difference in the number of points earned by each team. When playing cards, many games assign a point count to particular cards. In Bridge, for instance, the Ace is worth 4 points and in Canasta it is worth 20 points. The game of Bridge is mostly based on bidding about the points one has in their hand. Bidding 2 Clubs means I have 22 points. Whoa and wow
One can collect a point by agreeing to take a ‘loyalty card’ like from an airline or a credit card company. I spend to buy a flight and get mileage points. If I use that credit card I get points from the credit card company. Now what? Oh, well I can redeem points, if I have enough, to pay for some of my next flight. They say that shopping without a loyalty card is ‘pointless’. Ho ho ho.
A point can mean a moment in time, or in a play or a story or a plan or… It is a particular combination of circumstances coming together. Standing at the point they got to the point where the point had been made so there was no point in going further. A point is a reason. What is your point in doing this or that? I suppose the ultimate question is about the point of our existences as a species. Mmmm.. interesting point
