Queen Victoria’s birthday has been observed in Canada since at least 1845, originally falling on Victoria’s actual birthday (24 May 1819). It continues to be celebrated in various fashions across the country; the holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance.

Victoria’s birthday was made an official holiday in 1901, after her death. Parliament wanted to recognize her contributions to the country over her nearly 64-year reign. The third weekend in May was chosen as Queen Victoria Day and it was the signal that summer was on its’ way.  The weather was always beautiful…clear blue skies and bright sunshine.

Victoria, British Columbia is named after her. She named British Columbia. Regina in Saskatchewan is named after her. Alberta is named after her daughter, Princess Louise Alberta, who is named after her husband Prince Albert. In Ontario, we have Ottawa, which was named by Queen Victoria. Prince Edward Island is named after her father, Prince Edward, the one who lived in Canada for a decade.
