Simple
The length of the hypotenuse is the square root of the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
Simple, right? Some would argue that it is not at all simple, while others would definitely agree. Simple is relative. It usually indicates that what is referred to is not at all complicated, obvious, easy. The ability to skip rope is probably simple to a lot of people, but not for me. That skill is somehow complex until it suddenly isn’t.
Simple is unadorned, plain yet complete, easy and quick. The simple truth, without caveats, can be freeing or painful. Simple logic is only simple once it is understood and seen fully. We hear some speak of ‘simpler times’ and I’m not sure if that is giving up on the normal evolution of pretty much everything or a longing for the same, mostly because we are convinced that we do understand and see it fully.
Being called a simple person could be a compliment or the opposite. The compliment version suggests that you are what you appear to be. No masks or insincerity or manipulative stuff. What you see is what you get kind of thing. The other slant on being called simple is that one lacks in intelligence. So simple are they that they are very trusting, need little and can be in awe of the world. I kind of prefer the latter a lot of the time
Simple is unconditional, no strings or hidden costs. In this sense of the word, simple is honest. Why might any person not be simple? What would cause them to choose other than simple? It sounds so easy and clean and even happy. Simple is a counter to judgment and complexity. When I make up that you are somehow ‘less or wrong or unable’ that is me complicating and judging that simple is bad
Simple is the basis of nature. Nature does not complicate or make conditions but, rather, simply evolves. When water accumulates in its rush to the bottom of the mountain, it can naturally generate a stream. We could analyze the process until the cows come home, but is it not simply flow taking the path of least resistance. How simple is that? We can make the simple complicated if we want to. I don’t.
