The winner of the recent election in the United States, Donald Trump, referred many times to his idea of building a wall along the common border of the USA and Mexico. The concept of such a wall is not a new one, having been done in many different places over the millennia – most recently in Israel.
In Israel, from September 2000 to July 2003, Palestinian terrorists carried out 73 attacks, killed 293 and wounded 1950 Israelis. To prevent any more terrorist attacks, the Israeli government began to build a 20 ft high cement wall on their border with the West Bank, along a ‘border’ called the Green Line.
The wall has virtually stopped terrorist attacks, but has had markedly negative economic and humanitarian effects on the Palestinian people.
Open Bethlehem is a documentary that covers 7 years in the life of Bethlehem during and after the building of the wall. Bethlehem’s people have been separated from their farms, from their relatives, from their mosques and from their jobs.
Open Bethlehem is also the story of one woman’s attempt to ‘open’ the city again, to the world.
The film is showing at Christ the King Catholic Church, 6044 Spartan St, at 7 pm on Sunday, Dec 11. All are welcome. Admission is free. Mark your calendars now.
