The fitness industry is so much more than fitness. Noticed I called it an industry? Yup, industry. It’ll suck you in & spit you out. Most of the industry appeals to those who are already fit or those who are overly concerned with the way they look. Whenever I see a commercial of any type of fitness equipment, it has fitness models using the equipment & claiming how it’s changed their life (I could be wrong on this matter as I watch very little tv). Using fitness models who have been working on their physique for years to motivate ones who are probably over weight & don’t do much physical activity is not a healthy, realistic or practical way to encourage those with unhealthy lifestyle to start changing to a more healthy daily living.
That’s one reason being in a small community is so wonderful! We don’t have big box gyms and fitness centers that cater to athletes & physique competitors only. We don’t have personal trainers or classes that yell at you, saying things like no pain no gain. Keep going until you puke. If it doesn’t kill you it makes you stronger. No one should feel uncomfortable going to the gym here (or anywhere for that matter) or taking classes. You don’t need to feel like you should already be fit or look fit in order to be at the gym. You don’t need to worry about the clothes you wear, as long as they are comfortable to move around in (jeans and high heels aren’t appropriate!).
We don’t have group classes that you attend for months & never get to know the other regulars. You don’t have to make friends if you don’t want to. My experience in group settings is that everyone gets to know each other at least a little bit. Most everyone talks & laughs & has fun. We want to have fun! On the other hand, if the talking is non stop, I know they aren’t working hard enough (depending on the type of group class). So if someone is singing along, I know they are enjoying themselves which is good, but at the same time if you want results, you’re going to have to work hard enough that you can’t sing for too long :)
Showing up is the hard part. Once you’re there, it’ll all fall into place. If you are setting new goals& need the social support to help you reach your goals, check out what’s available in your community. As most of you know, here in Oliver we have a newly expanded gym. The community center offers classes for all ages & fitness levels. At the beginning of a new season, the community center offers Try it Free week so you can try out all the classes to see which one will best suit you.
Don’t be shy. Don’t be embarrassed. Don’t let fear stop you. Do show up! Take that first step & the others get easier with each step you take.
Practice makes Permanent.
Move more to feel better.
