Hwy 97 (Waterman’s Hill at Old Kaleden Rd) about 7:30 pm Monday
Driver of tandem trailer rig heading south crosses line into northbound lane hitting the concrete barrier, dumping load of apples (in boxes). Truck erupts into flames with driver getting out with no serious injuries.
OK Falls Fire Department called to control the blaze as first responders. Police, ambulance and Argo Rd Maintenance called to the scene. Traffic diverted northbound onto Eastside Rd and southbound onto side roads near Kaleden junction.
Traffic restored after midnight and flowing well at 6:45 am Tuesday.
The truck had swerved to avoid deer according to Penticton RCMP.
Community Policing Co-ordinator Rick Dellebuur said Tuesday morning that the lone occupant of the vehicle was a female who was transporting apples – from Oliver that just been weighed at the Kaleden weigh station.
The woman got out of the vehicle, but the truck, a 2011 freight liner with Orbit Freight Systems out of Calgary, was destroyed by the fire.
