Exercising regularly even for those with balance & mobility issues caused by neurological disorders such as stroke & MS, not only has physical benefits but emotional/mental health benefits also.
People report that since starting a regular exercise routine that they are more positive, happy, proud& relaxed. This can also have a positive impact on care givers too!
You may want to improve your situation but maybe you are fearful, embarrassed or lack motivation to get started. Other concerns you may have are accessibility, cost or transportation.
Participating in community exercise programs & applying what you learn at home, will improve your self care, getting from A to B in your house & beyond, household activities such as making the bed, vacuuming, washing dishes & cooking etc. You may also reduce the need for assistance.
Participating in a community exercise program is social & fun. Many participants say how they enjoy talking to others, especially those who are able to relate to the difficulties that you yourself are facing. These classes are fun too. Many times participants will develop close relationships with their fellow participants & may do other activities together outside of the exercise program. Seeing others that struggle like you do enjoy an exercise program, will help motivate you & will help you stick to the program.
Participating consistently in a program that is right for you may benefit you in ways similar to what others have experienced. Such as going out in the yard again, managing the stairs, relying less on your care giver & needing less assistance as your walker or cane. Some haven’t had to rely on their walkers or canes like they used to. They may only use it when in more dangerous situations such as rough or icy walkway.
In such exercise programs, when one successfully accomplishes a task that they hadn’t been able to do for a long time, not only does that individual feel proud & rejoice, but the whole class does! Applause & praise is given because it is rewarding for all involved.
So if you are in a situation of wanting to change but are fearful, embarrassed, or lack motivation, have concerns over accessibility, cost or transportation, please contact the local health center, community center or other local organization & you will receive the help you need. We have a wonderful community of volunteers that will be happy to assist you to get you to your goals.
