Out
I can be put out by you in two ways. You can physically remove me by putting me out the door. Or you can be unhappy with me and feel put out by me. To put me out in a game of baseball is possible by strikes, or being tagged as I run. And out house is a small building set out apart from the house used as a toilet. If you say that I am really out there, it means I am set apart from the crowd, hopefully in a good way
An outlier is not in the group, set apart, obviously different, not belonging. I have felt like that a few times. You? To be on the out is to be marked for dismissal. Outlandish is over the top extreme and it can refer to the colour of my shirt or the strangeness of my idea or just the shear boldness of something done or said. I like to be outlandish sometimes. Helps to make a point more memorable
To be out of something is to have none left, like to be out of bricks. But with bricks I can always go get some more. What if I am out of time? Time just kinda rolls along and the idea of being out of time is a thinker. What about being out of sorts? That isn’t running out of anything, just an unhappy uncomfortable feeling. And no, I am pretty sure that I can’t run down to the store and buy up some sorts
I can say ‘out there’ and mean somewhere other than here. I can say ‘out here’ and mean the neighborhood I live in and am standing in. To be outstanding I need to be above, better, a high performer. To be shown out, is not to be shown anything but to be escorted from the place I was in. Some people say ‘get out’ and mean, strongly that they want me to leave. Some say ‘get out’ as a joyful way to express ‘wow’
Out of the way can be a command to make the path clear. Getting things out of the way could mean to solve issues that are stopping progress. To be out of my mind means to be thinking in ways that someone has decided is well out of the norm. Thing is, I often deliberately explore out of the norm. So am I out of my mind? Maybe, maybe not, but I like it either way. Come on out and let’s play
