Principal of Tuc-el-nuit Elementary School in Oliver – replacing Shendah Benoit who has moved to a district wide position.
Will Eaton is the latest school administrator appointed in the district (SD 53 Okanagan Similkameen) after 5 years as Vice-Principal of YouLearn.
Eaton is the father of three, 20 years in the Similkameen, a Masters Degree in Learning and Technology from Royal Roads University in Victoria and recently sat on the Premier’s council on direction and change – a precursor to the new curriculum.
This 50 year old is excited with his new position and working with a capable and innovative team of professionals. He states that the “medical model” of problem solving is a judgment coupled with a band aid – with a more modern approach: a collaboration of student, parents, teacher and other help. Individualized learning is the centre of the curriculam not just class expectations.
The new approach is to build trust between the stakeholders for a better outcome for each student.
Eaton credits some of his recent moves on a break from education that took him into classes at university with business experts not educators. Where outcomes are determined and expected. Eaton referred to it as “sharpening the saw”.
He referred to all the new technologies and said they are not without danger. Technologies should be a considered a set of tools not an end to learning the basics.
Doors at Tuc-el-nuit School open on Tuesday.
