I could do a story on people and quotes but in this instance I can get more out of the story by putting in my thoughts as well.
For a long time the PRO park people have stated the Indian Nations are in support of a National Park.
This sign that recently went up on Hwy 3A suggests a different point of view.
I heard recently that the Government of BC is set to engage with the Okanagan Nation in a deep conversation on just what the indigenous people want and hope to gain by face to face talks on a park, control of crown land etc.
In my opinion this process will result in something tangible – discussion of a large National Park in the Similkameen/South Okanagan will not.
The province of BC has identified two zones – one near Spotted Lake and the second near various nature reserves at Vaseux Lake and would like to offer them to Ottawa – but first things first – the BC government wants the natives on board so that everyone is singing the same song.
It’s called the win-win – where no one gets their way. Everyone loses something but progress is made.
Those talks are tentative but likely in September/October – ODN will keep you posted.
