Apple of My Eye
The expression used in the title was originally a reference to the value of the pupil of our eye. It is the most sensitive part. It contains the transparent, aqueous humor through which light enters that carries the image being seen. Therefore it is very precious. The promise “I will guard you as the apple of my eye” emphasizes that we would do whatever we can to prevent damage to that part in order not to lose our eyesight. When the Lord declared that whoever touches my people touches the apple of my eye He was making it very plain that he values His people a lot.
It may be difficult for some people to think that Almighty God would ever care enough about them to guard them that closely. We probably don’t have the faintest idea of how often He has had to do that. As soon as something unpleasant happens to us we tend to think that God doesn’t care. We dismiss the idea that there might be a good reason for that unpleasant event or circumstance. A measure of how much He does care would be “God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” What more evidence do we need that He cares when He was willing to die for us as payment for our iniquities?
