To rate something is to label it on a scale, like a rating of 8 out of 10. I recall a movie entitled 10 where this guy would rate women he saw. It was just a thing he did until he saw a ’10’ (Bo Derek) and became obsessed with meeting her. There are companies that rate things, like TV shows, which are supposed to indicate how good the shows are, or not. If you say that I don’t rate, you disapprove of me
A rate can refer to a fee, an amount to pay per unit, as in so many cents per kilowatt hour to pay for electricity. The ‘going rate’ is the typical payment, which could be for anything, including small bribes to buying answers to exam questions. Oh oh. A rate can also refer to a rank, as in the military, where one can earn their rate. In this case there are criteria to meet in order to be promoted to the next rate
When I buy cable vision for my TV there is a monthly rate. But nowadays, if I bundle in the fee for my internet I can get a better rate. So a rate is not necessarily fixed. So too if I buy in quantity I can often get a better rate. Sometimes that goes the other way and if I only want one, the rate is much higher than what is advertised. I can give a better/higher rate for what I perceive is quality and/or special treatment
A rate, when I rate another person, is, most of the time, basically a judgment. The times it is not a judgment it could well be a score or an assessment of skill level, which can be helpful. To rate well, many might try to ‘look good’ and miss the option of actually ‘doing good’. To do well, in the long run, provides the best rating. The rate of a reaction can be a valuable measure in chemicals being combined. Not so much in humans
Mortality rate is about the number of deaths in a particular population sample. The bit rate is the speed and quantity of information moved/processed by a computer. When the temptation to rate another person shows up, I try to side step it. Gets me in trouble when I don’t sometimes. Besides, after getting to know them better, I like being pleasantly surprised at how wrong my rating was.
