Currently, the fire danger rating throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre is low to moderate. This fire danger rating is representative of the amount of precipitation we’ve received over the last couple weeks. However, temperatures in the thirties are forecasted for the next 3-4 days. These high temperatures, coupled with wind, will result in forest fuels drying and will cause the wildfire risk to increase.
In addition to these hot and windy conditions, we are also anticipating some lightning activity over the course of today and this evening. This lightning activity could result in more fire starts as the warm and dry trend commences and continues into next week, as lightning strikes can smoulder underground for up to two weeks.
We want to ensure that the public is cautious and safe with their fire use this weekend as we may be entering a time of more seasonal temperatures. Some safety tips include never leaving a campfire unattended even for a short time, making sure that there is a fuel free area or ring around the fire, making sure you have enough water on hand to extinguish the fire and always ensuring that the remnants of the fire, such as the wood or ash, is cool to the touch before assuming it is out. It is very easy for a campfire to escape, especially in windy conditions.
