Mind
To mind something or someone, is to care for and watch for their safety, as in minding a baby. I don’t mind, means that I am not concerned. The mind is not the brain but the ‘place’ where recognition, appreciation, feelings, emotions and such things are processed. Thus, we speak about the state of mind of a person. When I say, “I have a mind to…” that is a statement of intention
To be mindless is not to be without a mind, but rather to be in a state of action that seems to lack direction, all over the place. Mindless and directionless are the same thing. When we say someone has ‘lost their mind’, we mean that they are doing something that is way out of the normal bounds of my definition of good decision making. From the person’s view, they may have simply made up their mind to change
About making up one’s mind, that can be quite a difficult thing sometimes. It is the state of a decision in progress, a choice not yet decided upon. For many, when they have made up their mind, have decided, after this process, the decision seems stronger. Resolve becomes strong. Action soon follows and things get done, big time. Staying in making up my mind for a long time is called procrastination
Mind what you are doing. Well that is a rather parental kind of directive. We all have some of that. It is supposed to mean, I love you, please be careful, stay safe. And, it is often interpreted as judgment of the parent. So sad, and yet so , normal growth, whether in family or in Corporate. Yes, what is your experience?
When I say I don’t mind I mean it is OK with me. When I am to mind the farm it means to take care of things, whatever needs caring for, and no, not a real farm (though it could be). When I say I have a mind to do something I mean I have the intention to do that thing. It is not a commitment but a possibility I am thinking about. In London the subway announcement is ‘mind the gap’, meaning pay attention to it
