Some days ago – SORCO received calls about a young owl pecking at peoples feet and diving down at them when they would go outside, when our volunteer was on the way to asses the situation more calls came in, at first we believed it was the same chick however both calls stated that they were looking at the owls in their yards, they were within two blocks of each other, realizing these 2 birds were siblings we went to the first call, the bird ran up to the volunteer squawking, realizing this bird was imprinted we had to rescue it.
When we got to the second bird it was 8 feet up a tree and made a rescue impossible. We were told people had been feeding these birds raw chicken for weeks thinking their squawking was because they were hungry, by feeding these birds they became human imprinted. We received calls Saturday that after we left the second bird, people put more chicken out, unfortunately during the night the bird flew down to get it and hit a power line and was electrocuted, we are now receiving calls of a third bird in the area acting in the same manner. Please do not feed wildlife it is illegal and you are doing more harm than good!! For the first bird its out come is uncertain, if we can’t reverse the human damage and release it, we will have to find another center willing to take it.
