Seeds
Many of us have planted seeds in a garden. Some of us may have looked at the seeds in our hand and wondered how this shriveled up little piece can possibly grow into a beautiful flower or a watermelon or a carrot. The powerful genetic programming inside the seed is just waiting for the right conditions of moisture, warmth and nutrients to become what it was meant to be. What amazing potential in such and unpromising item!
We take it all for granted. We simply accept that each seed will consistently produce what we expect from it. We have faith in the solid predictability of what will grow even though placing a tiny bit of “stuff” in the dirt carries little visible promise. We expect beneficial results. But there are enemies. Diseases, insects and hungry animals can ruin our work. We may even trample it ourselves.
The same pattern exists in our relationship to God, the Creator of this marvel. Our tiny seed of faith may seem so powerless and insignificant but God promises huge benefits. However, there are also enemies. Temptations and tests from around us, plus tendencies toward wrong from within us, war against these benefits. Repentance and faith bring forgiveness of sin. Continuing to exercise faith in God develops character and maturity. The promise of God is that “anyone who is in Christ is a new person.”2 Cor.5:17
God loves you and is very interested in providing the conditions of spiritual warmth and nutrition that will produce the beneficial and beautiful person you were meant to be.
It’s wonderful on the sunny side,
