CBC News has learned the province is set to announce more than $20 million in education funding this morning to be divided amongst school districts, based on size.

Education Minister Mike Bernier will announce details of the funding in Surrey — the largest district in the province — which will be getting the biggest allotment, around $3 million.

Last year, school districts were told to find administrative savings. Government sources say the province is now putting those savings back in district coffers because of B.C.’s strong economic position.

There will be no restrictions on the use of the funds, but the province will urge the school districts to put the money towards front-line student services.

For example, districts could use the money to keep schools open or hire teachers. Several schools across the province are facing closures, including in Vancouver and the South Okanagan.

The announcement isn’t likely to sit well with the B.C. Teacher’s Federation.

BCTF first vice-president, Glen Hansman, posted several messages on Twitter on Monday night linking to school districts’ recent letters admonishing the province for pushing through the cuts over recent years.
