NBN Basketball Camps is entering its 15th year providing a top-notch basketball player development camp at SOSS in Oliver.
The camp has seen numerous Canadian and Foreign national team players work at the camp as coaches. The one consistent however has been the solid modelling and coaching of camp founder and Basketball BC Hall of Famer Spencer McKay. McKay, who was born and raised in Oliver, felt a passion to give back to his community and the game that has given so much to him. A standout player in high school, Spencer led the SOSS Hornets to the provincial title in 1986.
He followed that success up with a stellar 5-year career at University of Victoria where he set the school scoring record while being the only player in school history to be named All-Conference in each of his 5 years, as well as being voted an All-Canadian 3 times. Throughout those years Spencer had the honor of representing Canada on the Jr. and Sr. National teams. This allowed him the opportunity to play against some of the greatest basketball players in the world at the FIBA World Championships, the FISU Games, the Pan American Games and at the World Jr. tournament: Charles Barkley, Stacy Augmon, Karl Malone, Shaq O’Neal to name a few.
Spencer parlayed all that national team experience into a professional career in France, Portugal, Mexico, Hungary and Belgium. Through those connections he was able to convince high calibre European and Canadian National team players to come to the small community of Oliver to impart their basketball wisdom on the local basketball community. This helped to build an atmosphere of success as the SOSS Hornets were able to go on to win two AA provincial titles in 2009 and 2011. Players like: Jas Gill (Waterloo, UBC), Gurb Gill (Langara) , Greet Gill (UBC0), Harey Dhaliwal (Grande Prairie) Parm Dhaliwal, Emily Jentsch (UVic) and Ashley McGinnis (UVic) were able to take what they learned and make it at the CIS level of University sports in Canada.
The hopes of Spencer and all the coaches is that every camper will gain an understanding and respect for the game which will in turn lead to success when they play. The camp will run July 5-8th 2016, 9am-12pm (Rookie Camp), and 2pm-5pm (Pro Camp) at SOSS main gym.
