Switch
A switch can be a thin branch used like a whip. A willow branch can make a good switch. That kind of switch was used in the olde days when a youngster needed some discipline. Nowadays it is probably illegal. The wall switch near your doorway turns the lights on or off. Someone could say, ‘switch on the lights’ and you know what to do. To switch positions is you sit where I now am and I’ll sit where you are
To switch a train to another set of tracks we move a big honkin’ switch so the wheels of the train move to follow a new direction. Now that is a switch with impact. To switch can be a courageous thing or an evil move. It would be courageous to switch from a life as a gang member to one of being a good citizen under the threat from the gang of dire consequences. A phone switch is an electrical panel that facilitates connection between phone lines. So if you call me your phone gets connected to mine, but not anyone else’s. Then we have party lines, conference calls and such where indeed many are connected to one. Those used to be an inboard and an outboard with an operator who plugged wires in to set up the connections. That whole thing was called a switchboard
