On Saturday April 16, 2016, Mr. Nykola (Nick) Szmata of Oliver passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 94 years.

He was predeceased by his first wife Ida; son Robert Szmata and brother Matt Szmata.

Nick will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Martha; son Jim (Jeannette) Szmata; daughters Audrey (Bob) Peace and Shelley (Mark) Zieske; grandchildren Sherri (Ken) Caumartin, Troy Szmata, Mike Szmata, Janice Szmata, Shane (Carrie) Peace, Greg (Kelly) Peace; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Pete (Doreen) Szmata, Charlie (Mary) Szmata, Steve (Darlene) Szmata, John Szmata; step-sons Robert (Carol) Goltz, Lloyd (Diane) Goltz and Kevin Goltz as well as many extended family and friends.

Nick worked thirty-four years for the School District in Oliver as the cook in the cafeteria and was well known as the “Donut King”. He also owned and operated a café, two orchards and a motel. He also dabbled in catering and operated Centennial Park.

Nick was a director with the Oliver Credit Union for thirty years. He was also very active with St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oliver. Nick got the first hole-in-one at the Cherry Grove Golf Course in Oliver and enjoyed travelling with trips to Hawaii, Arizona, a Panama Canal cruise and to Europe.
