On Monday, I was invited over to the TOMLIN place after phoning Dorothy about a picture. Mrs. Tomlin said “And where were you?” about my non-appearance at a celebration Saturday. Let me digress to the headline. Fred had a fall off a kitchen chair on Sunday and taken to hospital. Not sure what happened. He is 96. He has a bruise, hit his head bad and was unconscious for a bit. He was revived and seemed fine except for his injuries. It will be a bit …before he gets home.
So what did I miss? 75 years of marriage together for Fred and Dorothy Tomlin celebrated Saturday at Park Drive Church by family, friends and the congregation who know the couple so well.
Laura Burton, bridesmaid with Dorothy Burton now married to Fred Tomlin April 17 1941 with best man – at right – Andrew Endreny – hard to believe Andrew and Fred – about 21 years old in this picture. Location – Catholic Church on Fairview Rd.
Mr. Leo Burton and family came to Oliver in the thirties but returned to a Saskatchewan farm leaving one girl in the arms of Fred – they had met at the packinghouse where she had a job at 25 cents an hour.
Fred and Dorothy had Lorne, Dennis, Ralph and Theresa. The young couple looked after two other girls who needed a home along with their own 4 children.
Top picture – a wedding picture of the original shoes from her wedding. Dorothy says a nephew brought a special gift to the party on the weekend – her mother’s engagement ring which she had always wanted to have.
By the way that bridesmaid is Laura Steele – still going strong at 93.
Many more anniversaries to Fred and Dorothy Tomlin.
