Fast
To go fast is more about the speed an object or person is going now. Getting to fast is about acceleration and if I accelerate to get fast, fast, that is being quick. Some people can connect the dots real fast, meaning that they understand situations and things and instructions, etc, quickly. They are quick learners. To be on the fast track is to get to the destination/result sooner than the crowd
To hold fast is to hold strongly and such that whatever is being held does not move. A fastener is an aid to holding something fast, like glue or a screw or a nail or to weld into place. I can also hold fast to an idea, like that a certain politician or a certain Party is good or not good. When I hold fast to a belief it is likely that I close down the possibility of any other belief. That is a fast way to stubbornness
To fast is to reduce the amount I eat. I might fast as part of a Spiritual experience or a religious season, like lent. To fast is to deny myself to come into closer contact with my thoughts about lack and getting to notice that after it all, even if it was 40 days, I’m still here and I’m still fine. We could also fast from a behaviour. Whoa, think about that one. Which behaviour would you choose to fast from?
To be fast is not always the best thing, though world opinion seems to lean that way. I don’t recommend being fast with grandchildren, an apology or a brand new employee or a student. These and many more examples, are better approached with other than ‘fast’ top of mind. This is the idea that I choose to hold fast to when it comes to being fast. Swat a mosquito? Do it fast. Deepen a relationship? Fast is not the best path
If we call him fast Eddie, we are saying he is not to be trusted. Fast is a relative term. Earth is spinning at speeds way, way faster than any race car can go, and, do you feel like we are going fast right now? To be fast a furious is not necessarily a compliment. In doing a job, sometimes fast is the opposite of good. If you could be both fast and good at something, what would that something be?
