Obituary for the late Barbara Wiens
December 23, 1919 – March 15, 2016
On Tuesday March 15, 2016, Mrs. Barbara Wiens of Oliver passed away peacefully after a short illness surrounded by family at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 96 years. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob; son Edward; infant daughters Beverlee and Elaine and son-in-law Gus Wood.
Barbara will be deeply missed by her loving family including daughter Loreen Wood of Armstrong; grandsons Len (Bobbi) Wood, Jack (Pattie) Wood and Pat Wood all of Armstrong, Jim (Leah) Wiens of Oliver; granddaughters Cheri (Larry) Osborne of Peachland, Marilyn Wiens, Teri Tater (Cliff) and Bonnie Hayes (Joe) all of Oliver as well as many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Barbara came to Oliver in 1939. They were founding members of the Mennonite Church. Together they raised children on the family farm at Testalinda Creek. Barb sold the farm after Jake passed away and moved closer to town. She lived in Oliver until 1991, after which she relocated to Kelowna and eventually Penticton. She returned to Oliver in 2014 to be closer to Ed’s children. Barbara volunteered and fundraised for several organizations over the years. She held a walkathon “over the hump” to Cawston for several years to raise money for our local hospital. Variety Club and other charities. Most important to Grandma was her family. She was always willing to help all of us in any way she could.
We will all miss her dearly. Thank you to all the nurses and care aides at SOGH and to Dr. Evans & Dr. Thomas. A celebration of Barbara’s Life will be held at a later date. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com
