Osoyoos council briefs
Police public forum April 14
Osoyoos RCMP officer-in-charge Sergeant Randy Bosch is hoping for a big turnout at next month’s public information forum on local policing issues.
Bosch told town council Monday he hopes to have all local RCMP members at the Thursday, April 14 gathering at the Sonora Centre at 6:30. “I want more police-public engagement,” he said.
The final list of topics isn’t complete, but will likely cover ongoing criminal activity, like fraud and auto theft.
Bosch said senior staff from the Penticton detachment, including Superintendent Kevin Hewco, would likely attend the approximately 90-minute event.
Drag racing to return to airport
The Wine Country Racing Association has received approval for its six weekends of drag racing at the Osoyoos Airport.
Town council okayed the contract on Monday for racing days on April 30-May 1, May 28-29, June 4-5, June 18-19, September 24-25 and October 8-9.
The association pays the town one third of ticket revenue. Last year the town’s take was about $4,000.
Lake wall and stairway to Gyro Park approved
Osoyoos council has approved about $52,000 for repairs to the beach wall adjacent to the White Sands condos and to build a stairway leading to Gyro Park at the south end of the development.
The bulk of the money will pay for repairs to a 37-metre long stretch of the retaining wall that runs from the sailing club to the museum. It has been collapsing and causing safety concerns.
The other portion of the project will see a 1.5-metre wide concrete sidewalk with five flights of stairs from Spartan Drive to Gyro Park between White Sands and Mike’s Barber Shop.
