What is the difference between provincial and federal correctional centres and how do I contact them?
Provincial jails, known as correctional centres and pre-trial centres, are operated by the B.C. government. These centres hold people who are awaiting trial (remanded), and those who are serving a provincial custody sentence with BC Corrections. Provincial custody sentences are all sentences that are two years less a day in length.
Federal jails, also known as penitentiaries, are operated by the federal government. These centres hold people who are serving sentences that are two years or more in length. To find out about federal institutions in British Columbia, please phone Correctional Service of Canada …
Editor’s note: remand centres, correctional centres, jails, penitentiaries, prisons – these are all words.
They are state run institutions to incarcerate people found guilty or on remand from a court after being charged.
