A belt is a strip, usually of leather, placed around one’s waist and fastened/buckled at the ends, used to hold up one’s pants. If I get belted, it could mean someone took a belt and beat me or that they simply hit me hard with their fist. If I belt out a song, I sing it loud and with energy. A beltway is a road/freeway that kind of circles a city intended to let vehicles get more quickly around that city
The bible belt is a swath of territory in the southern USA. Tennessee is a part of that area. Nashville is said to be the buckle of the bible belt. Did you know that about two thirds of the bibles printed worldwide are printed in Nashville? This belt does not go all the way around anything. It is a region that is longer than it is wide and is large with a dominant feature, like the cotton belt.
A belt for use with a Japanese kimono is called an obi. In judo or other martial arts the belt colour tells us of the skill level of the wearer. A black belt is the top level. A money belt is one that has one or more pouches on it to hold currency bills. An ammunition belt holds bullets or grenades and is worn diagonally over the shoulder instead of around the waist. Batman wears a utility belt to hold his gadgets
If I am belting it out, I am singing at the top of my lungs and with gusto. That can be great to do and sometimes hard to hear, though it brings a smile just thinking about it. To belt along is to go fast. That may also be a reason that the road around a city is called a beltway. To put a belt on something, like say a project, is to add a layer of reinforcement or safety. Belt and suspenders is double safety
Some motorcycles, like mine, have a belt that is looped tightly around the shaft that the engine turns and the axle of the wheel. Engine turns, wheel turns, varoom. A conveyer belt is similar but wider and can be quite long, that we can put things on which will be ‘conveyed’ along to where they need to be. A rather wide waist belt, cinched tight, is called a girdle. Belts for men became generally popular in the 1920s. Gee, belts are versatile
