July 29 2013 – Kim Bolan – Vancouver Sun
A Hells Angels associate charged in a massive cocaine smuggling case has been denied bail in B.C. Supreme Court.
Justice Gregory Bowden read his decision Monday morning, denying Kevin Van Kalkeren his release pending a trial scheduled to begin in September 2014.
Bowden’s reasons, as well as submissions at the two-day bail hearing, are covered by a publication ban.
(That publication ban lifted today in Vancouver – February 19 2016) Van Kalkeren pled quilty to conspiracy to import only.)
Van Kalkeren’s relatives in the public gallery expressed dismay after Bowden denied Van Kalkeren bail.
The 44-year old Osoyoos man has been in custody, along with co-accused and full-patch Hells Angel David Giles, since their arrest in August 2012 after a 21-month undercover RCMP investigation dubbed E-Predicate.
Six others charged in the case were released on bail
Giles, Van Kalkeren, and two others are charged with conspiracy to import cocaine (in association with a criminal organization – the Hells Angels chapter based in Kelowna).
