Ok Falls Housing Society to meet next week to try to get project back on track.
Developments: BC Housing has turned down the first and only application for housing funds. RDOS Director Tom Siddon says the application last year was “ahead of the gun”.
Siddon says some land ownership issues need to be resolved before a 2nd application can be made.
The land on Willow Street adjacent to the Legion has some ownership ties to the Catholic Church which needs to be solved.
Here is some historical background
September 2015 from RDOS
Electoral Area “D” Director, Tom Siddon presented his request for funding to the Minister responsible for Housing, Rich Coleman, for an Assisted Living Facility in Okanagan Falls. The Minister indicated the Province is now open for applications to provide housing for low income residents. The Okanagan Falls application will need to resolve the land ownership and availability issue before they could move that application forward. The Regional District will continue to work with the Okanagan Falls Housing Society to develop their application.
May 2015 from Tom Siddon
Senior’s Housing Moves Ahead ~ On April 9th, I attended a meeting of the South Skaha Housing Society, held at the Legion in Okanagan Falls. The Society Chair, Lorraine Harrison introduced Mr. Kane
Bensten, a senior’s housing advocate from Kelowna. Bensten has assisted several housing societies to finance and build “affordable” senior’s housing in BC. He offered a number of helpful suggestions,
following which the Society agreed to prepare an application to the CMHC for a $10,000 planning grant* to develop the Terms of Reference for a Phase I project of about 30-50 seniors-appropriate housing units, located just West of the Legion in Okanagan Falls. This initial study would culminate in a business plan; it would also address land ownership issues and the necessary steps to prepare a proposalto BC Housing Corp for financial assistance.
