West Kelowna – A West Kelowna man is in police custody facing multiple charges and a truck stolen overnight in Chilliwack has been recovered.
On January 5, 2016 at 7:13 am, the West Kelowna RCMP received information that a vehicle, reported as stolen to Chilliwack Mounties, was being tracked using GPS by its owner to the 1100 block of Bazett Road in West Kelowna. Several General Duty (GD) and First Nations Policing (FNP) officers, from the West Kelowna Detachment, converged in the area and spotted the vehicle driving on Tomat Avenue towards Sneena Road. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspect driver fled from police.
A short time later, another officer followed fresh tracks in the snow and spotted the vehicle abandoned in a field in the 2500 block of Crestview Road. Officers set up an area of containment and a Police K9 was called in to search for the suspect driver who had fled on foot. An RCMP Reserve Constable located and arrested the suspect without incident, prior to the arrival of the police dog. The K9 successfully confirmed that the suspects track lead straight back to the stolen truck.
The stolen truck, a yellow Ford F-250, had what police describe as minor damage to its ignition. The truck was seized by police for further investigation and is expected to be returned to its owner in the days to come.
A 21-year-old West Kelowna man, known to police, remains in custody. He faces potential charges including, one (1) count of possession of stolen property over $5,000, two (2) counts of breach of a Recognizance and one (1) count of driving while prohibited. He is expected to appear before a Judicial Justice of the Peace.
