The town of Osoyoos will provide snacks and a location for the RCMP detachment to run a public meeting about the dangers of fraud, home security, vehicle thefts and other property crimes.
Newly-appointed detachment head Sergeant Randy Bosch said the goal of his project is to “educate people about how to protect themselves and to help us prevent crime.”
He envisions a one-and-a-half-to-two-hour evening session, probably in the early spring. “We’re not going to stop property crime, but I hope we can reduce it,” he said.
He said the level of sophistication of some fraud artists is such that elderly people are particularly vulnerable.
Bosch’s original proposal was for advertising to begin this month with the information session in January. But several members of council agreed that because so many residents go away for the winter, March would be better timing.
Mayor Sue McKortoff told Bosch to go ahead with the planning and that he can count on town support.
Chief administrative officer Barry Romanko said the town will provide refreshments along with a liaison person from the Sonora Centre.
