Coach Shelley Mantua, Abigayle Mantua, Ariana Mantua, Molly Koenig and Coach Becky Brimacombe
This past week has been busy for the South Okanagan Skating Club. Not only did they have their annual Skate-a-Thon but they also had three skaters compete in the Okanagan Interclub competition in West Kelowna.
Like any small organization in a rural town the club needs to add some fundraising to shore up its annual costs. The skaters took part in the Skate-A-Thon raising money for the club’s ice time and coaching fees. Over 45 skaters from Oliver took part in the annual event on November 24th raising over $1200 for the club. Skaters from various programs including CanSkate, CanPowerSkate and the competitive StarSkate programs skated circles. Over 3000 laps were counted in just under 2 hours by the club coaches Shelley Mantua and Becky Brimacombe, that’s an approximate 270 miles skated. The club would like to thank the community and local families for the generous donations for this annual event.
Continuing with the busy week, the three skaters that took part in the annual Okanagan Interclub competition had a successful weekend. Molly Koenig, competed for the 1st time in Star 5 placing 9th and landed two axels. Abigayle Mantua competed in both Interpretive and Star 5 and placed 8th in both events, landing a clean double salcow. Finally, Ariana Mantua competed in both Interpretive placing 11th and Creative placing 3rd. Creative is a competitive program where the skater only learns the music they will skate to on the day of the event. Great job ladies!
