Wayne Belleville of Oliver went through a traumatic event last summer when a man shot him on a hillside road east of Oliver and then stole his truck.
Today at Penticton Law Courts Belleville got a first hand look at the justice system and was not overly happy about how things are proceeding.
Ronald Arthur Teneycke, 52, appeared by video from the Kamloops regional jail. He asked for and got the judge to “issue a gag order” on any detail of today’s hearing which was very short. Judge Meg Shaw told Teneycke the ban on publication – previously given by another judge – will be extended to all charges.
Teneycke is charged with a number of offences: aggravated assault with a weapon and robbery for two instances well known in the Oliver area.
He will appear again in late January for the formal arraignment at which time the accused can plead and elect which type of court should hear the case.
Belleville met with Special Counsel Murray Kaay of Kelowna outside the courtroom and he explained to the victim the nature of the ban on publication and the process yet to come. Kaay says Teneycke may chose trial in Supreme Court – with that process taking up to 2 years.
Belleville spoke to reporters and stated he was surprised that the process is so slow – since this is November and the incidents happened last summer.
