Overflowing
Years ago shepherds depended on wells to provide water for their flocks of sheep. Often those wells were deep and the water had to be drawn by hand. That was tedious and hard work. Shepherds who didn’t really care about the well-being of the sheep would limit how much water each sheep got, much to the detriment of the sheep. Good shepherds, who loved their sheep, would keep drawing water and even make the large containers overflow to be sure that they all had what they needed. That must be where the imagery in Psalm 23 originated when it says “my cup overflows”.
Christ is the Good Shepherd Who does not skimp by doling out stingy portions. He loves to bless us to the point of overflowing with His goodness. God loves us and wants the best for us, but it won’t reach us if we ignore or reject Him.
“Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the one who trusts in Him.” Psalm 34:8
