Osoyoos Lake is set to get its own appreciation day, likely on the Victoria Day weekend next year, thanks to a plea from the lake’s advocacy group.
Birgit Arnstein, president of the Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society, asked a council committee Monday to designate a day and to provide support for it.
Judging by the comments from most members of council, the proposal will be approved as soon as town staff comes back with a report and proposed resolution, expected next month.
The special day will be part of what Arnstein called a public education campaign, which will also include a banner across Main Street, light pole banners, garbage can decals and a public information booth.
She said the May long weekend would be the ideal time because the tourist season is beginning and local snowbirds will have returned from the south.
Mayor Sue McKortoff warned that the society would likely be competing with the Market on Main, which opens the same weekend, but said there is likely room for cooperation between the events.
Victoria Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 23, 2016.
