About sixty people attended a dinner, speeches, drumming and silent march event Sunday night to raise awareness of the lack of action by the federal government on this issue.
Sisters in Spirit Vigil for Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Children with a walk from the OIB community hall to the CPR station where the people gathered with a ceremony at the Okanagan River.
Keynote speakers included Dan Wilson a representative from the Louie family, Laurie Wilson (Okanagan Nation Spokesperson for Missing & Murdered Women), Coola Louis (Union Of BC Indian Chiefs Women representative) and Richard Cannings (NDP candidate in the federal riding of South Okanagan-West Kootenay). Muriel Tanner and Chief Clarence Louie also spoke.
“This event is about raising awareness of the missing and murdered Aboriginal women and children, as well as the over-representation of female Aboriginal victims. We invite community members to stand in solidarity for the loved ones we have lost and to show your support to the friends and family of victims.
