Heritage Conservation -a new regional service to be set up (Bylaw 2706) to carry out heritage conservation services in all of the Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen allowed under the Heritage Conservation Act of BC. The annual cost of said service can be raised by taxes, fees, gifts and grants. Mayor Ron Hovanes asked that before municipal governments are asked to agree that some financial projections be issued to give the public an idea of what the costs are now and in the future. Most municipalities already have heritage societies that are funded in part by taxation. There will be a process in the next month to gain written support from all RDOS towns, villages, cities and districts to allow the new service. There is no budget implications in the next budget according to staff.- Directors approved a contract for $108,420 to SLR Consulting for a study on organics in the garbage retrieval system. The RDOS long range plan calls for land to be found for regional composting.
- RDOS directors heard a presentation from Lisa Eccleston, Okanagan Upcycle Resource Society on what work they do at Campbell Mtn. landfill in retrieving building material from the dump and reselling to the public at their present location which (because of success) is too small. Eccleston says the society is ‘still on the prowl for a bigger and better location’ to operate. The group has an agreement with the RDOS but was not there at a committee meeting to ask for money.
